Kafka is where my mind was headed, definitely … You got me! Too funny. Thanks for reading, Raymond.

Great article.
In some cases, I suppose, these rules would not apply, a child’s mind for example is far more adaptable to the ridiculous or improbable. Lol and I would not be doing my duty as an occasional Hard Sci-Fi writer to point out that anything “not human” would not think and act as humans do (or at least it is highly unlikely that they would).

Oh, and as an aside Kafka had someone turn into an insect.
And as a second aside, when you mentioned someone turning into a fly. Do you think the fly calls “Fly on the wall documentaries”, “Human with a camera? Sorry just me being silly.

Hi Dave, thanks so much for your thoughts! I see writers get so frustrated when their early readers tell them the story just isn’t believable—yet they see published books full of incredible story lines and circumstances that readers plunge into whole hog. I’m so glad you’ve discovered how to get off the ground with the lift provided by character motivation. Write on!

I’ve found myself nodding my head like an overactive bobblehead in agreement, both as a reader and as an author who has stumbled across scenes where a sequence of these actions and reactions flow effortlessly from my fingertips. Writing is so much easier and natural when it makes sense. And much like this article, everything just makes sense, lending credibility to the content in a rather serendipitous way. I’ve always felt that it’s not what a character does, but why a character does what he or she does that matters most. This article and these actionable things to keep in mind moving forward reinforce that perspective, so thank you.
