I use StoryBox, which is similar to Scrivener, and it allows me to track what’s happening in scenes and chapters as I go. It’s great. Can’t imagine using Word any more.

There’s a capability in Scrivener where you use the equivalent of post-it notes which would be very good for tracking scenes. I’m sure the scene maps would also be good, and when I finish my first draft (soon, I hope), I will go through and track my scenes as part of my revision strategy.

Erin, you and me both! But better late than never. I do hope you find it helpful. For me, it’s like using one of those black lights in a dark room. It illuminates so much. Good luck with your writing!

Oh, how wonderful, Kay! I do hope you experience the benefits I have in my own writing. Many times, clients struggle as to whether a scene should be cut, left alone, or revised. Scene tracking has always helped me identify which category a certain scene falls into and gives me the confidence I need to know the draft is solid. Best of luck in your scene tracking!

Joanne, adding a calendar to the mix really is a fantastic approach, especially in stories where there’s a bit of a ticking clock element going on. It really helps you to see if the change your character is experiencing is realistic over a period of time, too! Thanks for adding to the discussion!

An excellent point, Becca! This really does simplify things. It lets you zoom out, if you will, and focus on the bare bones of things. I tend to get overwhelmed by a detailed outline or anything fancy, so this has been my go-to! Thanks again for having me 🙂

I wish I had known about it sooner. It would have saved me at least one round of edits on my current manuscript. I will most definitely be doing this on my next project. This is going to save me so much editing time. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

I think people get freaked out about scene-level editing because many of them have done so much work planning out the storyline, and they think they’ve got to do it all over again for every scene. But this shows that editing scenes doesn’t have to be complicated. 🙂

I think scene tracking is a grat idea.
